Hydraulics

About Hydraulics

Hydraulic or hydraulic oil lubricants are relatively simple lubricants that are used in earthmoving and industrial machinery such as excavators, cranes, hydrostatic drive systems, etc. to transfer energy from hydraulic pumps to hydraulic motors or hydraulic pistons.

As simple as the hydraulic oils, they must be made of a good and stable base material and a composite chemical additive alloy to withstand the pressure and high temperature that are encountered in the hydraulic circuits. They must also have chemical stability so as not to create residue from temperature changes and to protect the internal parts from both the cavitation and the wear from the friction between the interior parts.

Types of Hydraulic Oils

Hydraulic oils are essentially divided into two major categories, HM / HLP and HVLP. The difference between the two types is their viscosity index. The first type is between 85 and 100 while the HVLP is between 130 and 140. The higher the viscosity index of a lubricant, the less it is affected by the temperature difference, ie it does not so much thin at higher temperatures, nor does it thicken at low temperatures. HVLP type lubricants were originally built for ships: a journey can start from Ecuador and end up at the North Pole. But one can easily calculate the benefits of these oils and we have seen them in more applications over the last few years.

Other types of lubricants used in hydraulic circuits

Besides the above oils specially made for use in hydraulic circuits, we can meet other types of oils used in hydraulic machine circuits for various reasons:

- For homogenizing lubricants.
- The hydraulic circuit is a small part of a machine that uses oil of another type.

- In simple systems with oil pumps suitable for thicker lubricants.

An example is the Caterpillar earthmoving machine manufacturer that uses SAE10w and / or SAE15w-40 engine types in place of hydraulic oil. Typically, these engine oils must meet the CAT TO-2 or the new TO-4 specifications.

The Bobcat Earthmovers manufacturer uses a lubricant for both transmission and plumbing in skid-steer loaders. Although Bobcat insists on the use of its original lubricant, it is essentially a UTTO type lubricant.

Another example is the hydraulic circuit in agricultural tractors using a lubricant (UTTO type, typically SAE10w-30) for transmission and hydraulic circuit. In older agricultural tractors, a STUO-type lubricant (typically SAE15w-40) was used which an oil was suitable for the tractor's machine, transmission, brakes and hydraulics.

Special Hydraulic Oils

Machines that work under difficult and special conditions typically require special lubricants. Some of the special hydraulics manufactured by CEPSA are:

Organic plumbing

CEPSA Bio Oil HM-S

For works in sensitive environmental areas such as parks, rivers, lakes and the sea, greenhouses and agricultural food production plants, CEPSA has the organic hydraulic BIO HM-S, which yields the same as ordinary hydraulic oils, due to the sophisticated chemical additives, their contact with the environment poses a much smaller problem since they are more easily broken down and absorbed by the soil.

Non-flammable hydraulics

CEPSA FUNDICOL HFC

It is a fire-resistant family of fire-resistant mixtures which are mixtures of water and glycol and are commonly used to work in confined spaces where a fire would have devastating effects such as underground quarries and foundries and where there is a risk of explosion or fire.

Hydraulic Oil Liquids

The fluidity of hydraulic oils is measured in Cst (centistokes) at the International Standards Office (VO) scale. Thus, the most common hydraulic oil, '68', has an ISO VG68 fluidity and equates to a fluid with about one SAE20 engine. Below are listed the main hydraulic fluid oils and their correlations with other types of lubricants:
